- A Nile hippopotamus calf was born July 12, 2021, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The calf made a splashy debut in the Safi River on Kilimanjaro Safaris, under the watchful eye of Disney’s animal care team. So far, the healthy calf is nuzzling with mom, Tuma, and moving through the water like a pro. The team is giving Tuma and her newborn ample time to nurse and bond, so the calf’s gender and weight might not be known for some time; a newborn hippo can weigh between 60 and 110 pounds. This birth marks the 10th hippo currently in Disney care. (David Roark, photographer)
