The second theme park built at the Walt Disney World Resort officially opened October 1, 1982 – making October 1, 2012, Epcot’s 30th anniversary.
This afternoon — Meg Crofton, President Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations U.S. and France, joined Disney executives, Epcot cast members and guests in celebrating with a 3 p.m. ceremony at America Gardens Theatre.
Performers at the ceremony included two musical groups with members who have worked at Epcot since opening day – Mariachi Cobre, a traditional mariachi band which performs daily in the Mexico Pavilion, and Voices of Liberty, an eight-part a capella group which sings American and patriotic songs at the American Adventure Pavilion.
At the end of the ceremony, cast members representing the international pavilions around World Showcase came on stage and cast representing Future World filled the aisles on each side of the audience. Crofton specially thanked the more than 150 Walt Disney World Cast members who worked at Epcot on opening day in 1982 and still work there today, as well as guests in the audience who were both in the park today and on October 1, 1982.
The evening’s presentation of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” will also feature a special 30th anniversary tag.
