    From tropical jungles and verdant forests to barren rock and frozen tundra, the mighty Himalayas reveal dramatic variations in climate and landscape. Disney Imagineers were challenged to re-create such a scene when designing Expedition Everest, the mountain attraction with coaster-like thrills opening in April at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World Resort.

    The bowling pins are six stories high, a colossal yo-yo pokes above the roofline of a four-story building. Eye-catching, out-sized icons are everywhere, from silhouettes of sock hop dancers and Pac-Man on balcony railings to gargantuan cans of Play Doh next to the Hippy Dippy Pool. Guests at Disney’s Pop Century Resort smile and point as they stroll past architectural detail rendered literally on 10 lodge buildings.

    A fish named Flounder and a crazy crab called Sebastian join Ariel and the rest of the cast under the sea in “Voyage of the Little Mermaid,” a unique show spectacular at Disney-MGM Studios.
    Featuring dazzling special effects, the show combines live performers with giant puppets and favorite clips from the film to tell the delightful story of Ariel.

    The 58,000-square-foot pavilion is located between Mexico and China overlooking World Showcase Lagoon. On display is Norway’s rich, seafaring history as well as its innovative leadership in fields such as shipping and underwater technology.

    Along the shoreline of the lagoon, a bright red torii gate, patterned after one in Itsukushima, welcomes visitors. A plaque inscribed in calligraphy proclaims “Japan.”
