LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., February 7, 2012 – Students interested in being selected to be their school’s Disney Dreamer and Doer may now work with their schools and teachers to self-nominate.
The program recognizes students in Central Florida’s Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties who consistently demonstrate outstanding character, lead by example and have a caring spirit. Since 1984, over 11,000 students have been recognized as a Disney Dreamer and Doer.
The deadline for Disney to receive the name of one Dreamer and Doer from each school is Wednesday, March 14th. Principals are advised to communicate an earlier deadline for students to self-nominate to ensure the final application is completed and submitted to Disney by the deadline.
Step 1:
a) Principals are asked to communicate to teachers that students may self-nominate if they are interested in being considered. Any student may apply, but only ONE is selected by the principal/selected representative. The ONE selected student becomes the school’s Disney Dreamer and Doer.
b) Each school must determine how they prefer to receive the student self-nominations, (i.e. on a typed sheet of paper, or email) – there is not a separate form for self-nominations. Schools must also set a deadline by when they need to have all student nominations so they meet our deadline.
c) Students are to write a 300 word essay on the following: Write a paragraph about something you have done at home, in school, or in your community that has inspired others, and makes your world, and our world, a better place. (Please note: only 300 words or less will be considered; no exceptions.)
d) Students will select ONE teacher to “champion” their application. This teacher will write a 75-word statement in support of the student’s application.
e) Student submits their nomination via process identified by school.
Step 2:
a) Once nomination process closes, school determines which one student will represent the school as the 2012 Dreamer and Doer.
b) Information on the selected student is submitted through the unique URL site sent only to principal/selected representative. (Note: the URL will only accept one student per school).
Step 3:
a) Once application is submitted, the teacher “champion” receives an email requesting their 75-word statement on the student.
b) Principal/representative receives confirmation that the student’s application is complete
Step 4:
a) A team of Disney Cast Members will meet on March 19 to select three (3) students per county (elementary, middle, high school levels) to represent their county as the Disney Dreamer and Doer Shining Stars
b) Shining Stars will be notified through a “prize-patrol” visit at their school on either April 3 or 4. (Note: Disney will contact schools sooner than the prize patrol dates to request assistance in signing up Shining Stars for Disney’s Conservation Celebration taking place April 12-14, as their participation will include reservations at a Disney resort.)
Good luck to all students, and all schools!
