MICKEY MELONS: A traditional summer treat — the watermelon — is
taking an entirely different look at Walt Disney World Resort in
Lake Buena Vista, Fla., as The Land pavilion at Epcot has developed
a process to grow Mickey Mouse-shaped watermelons. The Epcot
Science team shapes the young watermelons in special molds
(pictured, foreground) until the fruit forms the familiar shape of
Walt Disney’s most famous character. Les Frey (pictured),
horticulturalist for Epcot Science, checks the vines inside The
Land greenhouse for Mickey Melons ready for harvesting. The Mickey
Melons, available for guest viewing on the “Living with The Land”
boat ride through the greenhouses, will soon be offered as a summer
refresher to guests. 0603AW_009KP
