Donna, a 21-year-old African elephant, eats as her new calf Nadirah stands in her shadow on the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on Jan. 5, 2006. Behind them, a safari truck filled with theme park guests rides by. Nadirah (Swahili for “precious/rare/gift”) was born Dec. 19, 2005 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Today marked the first time the three-week-old calf joined other elephants on the park’s savanna. Nadirah is Donna’s first calf and the third elephant born at the park. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a breeding program that is part of a cooperative effort under the American Zoo and Aquarium Association
