New Fantasyland Brings National Spotlight to Central Florida

PhotoWalt Disney World Resort celebrated the latest chapter of classic storytelling this week with the grand opening of New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom. Singer Jordin Sparks delighted guests with a medley of tunes representing the stories of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo. Borrowing some magic of her own from the ABC series “Once Upon A Time,” actress Ginnifer Goodwin invited guests to enter into the enchantment. And leading the celebration was Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs. “We’re thrilled to take guests beyond the walls of Cinderella Castle to discover new worlds featuring iconic Disney characters and stories in ways that are more imaginative, more interactive and more immersive than ever before,†said Staggs. New Fantasyland’s debut placed a national spotlight on Central Florida as more than 2,500 journalists, celebrities and other guests attended the ceremonies. The three-day event also featured the re-opening of a newly re-imagined Test Track at Epcot and a preview of Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney. Read more.

  Community Gets Boost from Expansion

PhotoAs the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, New Fantasyland has doubled the size of the most popular land at the most popular theme park in the world while having a positive impact on the Central Florida community. Up to 700 construction jobs have been created and an additional 800 operational jobs — ranging from attractions hosts to management positions — will be added by the time it is completed in 2014. “Not only is this magical, story-filled land a milestone for Walt Disney World, it’s a boost for local jobs and businesses, and it offers families yet another reason to visit Central Florida,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, U.S. and France.

Splitsville Rolls into Central Florida, Creates Jobs

PhotoThe latest trend in boutique bowling is rolling into Downtown Disney with the opening of Splitsville Luxury Lanes Dec. 19. With 30 lanes and an impressive menu, the upscale, retro-style bowling and dining venue is creating more than 300 new jobs in Central Florida. “We are thrilled to expand Splitsville to the Central Florida area as our largest and flagship location,” said Guy Revelle, co-founder of Splitsville. “From a new twist on a beloved sport to a menu you’d never expect to find in a bowling facility, Splitsville truly has something for everyone and is perfect for families and guests of all ages.” Learn more here.

Collaboration Fuels Newly Re-Imagined Test Track

PhotoSpanning from Detroit to Central Florida, the re-opening of Test Track Presented by Chevrolet represents the end of a journey that took Walt Disney Imagineers deep into the heart of the automotive industry. In order to give Walt Disney World guests the thrill of designing their very own virtual vehicle — then putting their design through its paces — Imagineers sought inspiration from Chevrolet designers. “The re-imagined Test Track portrays an optimistic view of the future, and reflects the deep collaboration between Disney and Chevrolet on both the design and the overall experience,” said Eric Jacobson, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering. “It’s a thrilling attraction supported by rich exhibit displays and interactive elements that bring guests directly into the design process — with a few surprises thrown in.” Read more.

Disney Shares Holiday Spirit with Groups that Aid Homeless

PhotoTwo local groups that work to end homelessness and its underlying causes in Central Florida recently received a special holiday gift from Walt Disney World Resort. The Central Florida Commission on Homelessness and the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida each received $50,000 for their efforts. “Disney is at our side, regularly and consistently, helping us do the work we do,” said Brent A. Trotter, President/CEO for the Coalition for the Homeless. Disney surprised the organizations during a special presentation of the Candlelight Processional at Epcot for 1,400 community leaders. Read more.

Cast Members Pledge $3.4 million to United Way

PhotoWalt Disney World Cast Members demonstrated their generosity and commitment to the community again this year by pledging $3.4 million to Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW). As the largest supporter of health and human service agencies in Central Florida, HFUW helps fund nearly 100 programs for families and individuals in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. “This contribution truly makes a powerful statement about Disney’s values and its commitment to the communities where its Cast Members live and work,” said Robert H. (Bob) Brown, president and CEO of HFUW. For 40 years, Walt Disney World has supported HFUW through a workplace giving campaign, corporate support, sponsorship of special events and volunteer leadership.

Disney VoluntEARS Ready to Deliver Toys for Local Kids

PhotoHoping to make an impact on local children, thousands of Cast Members at Walt Disney World Resort are checking their lists and adding one more name to their holiday shopping — Toys for Tots. For the past two weeks, Cast Members have collected games, books and plush dolls as part of the annual U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. The toys are meant to send a message of hope to youngsters by ensuring they have at least one new gift to open during the holidays. Last year Cast Members donated almost 30,000 toys for children who live in Orange and Seminole counties.
