LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Sit back in the good ol’ barber’s chair and get ready for a good old-fashioned haircut at Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom. Located near the Emporium gift shop with a signature candy-striped pole outside, Harmony Barber Shop transports Walt Disney World guests to a simpler time … a time when barbershop quartets entertained with harmonic tunes and when getting a haircut (or two) was a real treat.

A step into Harmony Barber Shop is a step back in time. Hair tonics and talcum powders line the dark burgundy shelves. The Dapper Dans barbershop quartet strolls by daily, singing melodious tunes in perfect harmony and entertaining guests with their humorous banter.

“Guests are always surprised to find there’s a real barbershop here,” says Mary Volley, who works at Harmony Barber Shop. ”They think it’s a display and take pictures, but once they see it they can’t get away… they end up wanting a haircut.”

Guests may be amazed to discover that some of the antiques in Harmony Barber Shop are still in service. A turn-of-the-century Western Electric phone box is still used to make phone calls. Also of note is the cash register the barbers use to ring up their sales. It dates from 1912.

Although small and quaint, Harmony Barber Shop performs between 350 and 400 services a week. Haircuts for children age 12 and under are priced at just $15. Another popular treatment for kids as well as kids-at-heart is colored hair gel, which costs $7.50. Of course there are also services for grown-ups to enjoy. An adult haircut costs $19. Beard and mustache trims are $5.

“First Haircuts” is the establishment’s specialty. Young Walt Disney World guests who receive their first haircut at the Magic Kingdom barbershop are treated to many delightful surprises, from “pixie dust” and bubbles to Mickey Mouse stickers, and an extra-special “My 1st Haircut” set of Mouse Ears and certificate. The “My 1st Haircut” special is priced at $18.

Harmony Barber Shop only accepts appointments for those staying at a Disney resort or guests who have a dining reservations. Guests without reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. All Walt Disney World guests can, however, make appointments to get their “whiskers” trimmed at these other Walt Disney World locations:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — It takes a village — more than 58,000 cast members to be exact — to keep the show going at Walt Disney World Resort. With more than 3,000 different job roles available, it’s hard, if not impossible, to find a more diverse group anywhere.

Whether an individual’s expertise is in exploring the big blue world at The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion at Epcot or designing topiary Disney characters, there’s a place for a staggering array of skill sets within the 40-square-mile Vacation Kingdom. Here are some of the more unique roles:

Life is a song at Harmony Barbershop in Magic Kingdom, where licensed cosmetologists perform basic haircuts with a sprinkle of pixie dust. The shop specialty is the first haircut — a ceremony commemorated with special “First Haircut” Mickey ears and a certificate with a placeholder for a lock of hair — which barbers perform about 300 times a month. Basic cuts are standard for the older set, but with giant-sized neon scissors and combs on-hand, the barbers guarantee that even a basic ‘do is far from ordinary.

Seven days a week at 4 p.m., two cast members from the animal programs team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge transform into safari guides, leading club level resort guests on the Wanyama Safari, a three-hour tour and dinner experience that recreates a true African afternoon game drive. Guides receive in-depth training on the 200 animals housed at the lodge before leading the hour-and-a-half experience through the resort’s three savannas. While leading the tour, they dispense insider knowledge about the natural history and management of the animal collection, pointing out as many of the resort’s species as possible.

Blooms and blossoms abound for topiary artists and designers at Walt Disney World Resort. The creative process begins with a “maquette” — a wire and clay sculpture of a Disney character — which is used as a reference for a full-size steel frame created by the team’s welders. Designers then stuff the frame with moss, choose the plant material (common choices are Ficus pumila, Moneywart and Alternanthera), and decorate with small individual plants called plugs. Completed topiaries are irrigated, manicured, trimmed, fertilized and transported to locations throughout Walt Disney World property where they grow over time before guests’ eyes.

It’s better down where it’s wetter — or so say the Walt Disney World animal care aquarists, a team of marine scientists who monitor the day-to-day care of the resort’s many species of fish, turtles and sea life. The main marine environment, found in the heart of The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion at Epcot, contains 5.7 million gallons of seawater and is home to sea turtles, sharks, stingrays and small fish such as neon gobies and peppermint shrimp. The aquarium team rotates between systems, also working with the leopard sharks, bonnethead sharks, parrotfish and southern stingrays who call Typhoon Lagoon Shark Reef home.

At the fingertips of 180 Walt Disney World seamstresses are no less than 1,000 fabrics, 75 shades of thread and more than 800 kinds of buttons. Each day, these materials combine to create and maintain the 15,000 unique entertainment costumes and 15,000 operational garment pieces worn by members of the Walt Disney World cast. And every piece is built from scratch — one of the most impressive being the “parfait” hat worn in “Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage,” which took more than 58 hours of handiwork to create.

The Fairy Godmothers-in-Training at Downtown Disney’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique have one goal in mind: turn as many little girls as possible into princesses. The process involves providing head-to-toe makeovers for guests, including Disney-inspired up-do hairstyles, makeup, nails, and for some, full imperial regalia including princess dresses, crowns, wands and shoes. Fairy Godmothers-in-Training must also coach guests in the art of royal behavior, instructing proper technique in the princess wave, curtsy and walk.

Adrenaline rushes, pounding heartbeats and full-throttle action are part of a normal workday for the precision drivers at “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. More than 20 drivers rotate through a schedule where they perform up to three shows and two tracks per day in one of five European chase cars or three hero cars, all outfitted with a special motorcycle engine for stunt-precision driving. Among the maneuvers the drivers perform are spectacular 180s, 360s, sliding 90s, two-wheel driving and fly-through-the-sky jumps.

The Walt Disney World Resort has a variety of guest service roles available in the theme parks, water parks and resorts throughout the year.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — As millions of guests scurry throughout Walt Disney World Resort to see Mickey Mouse, little do they realize they may be passing him right by.

And though the Mickeys they miss are not the life-sized, two-legged and three-fingered variety, they are "Hidden Mickeys" — silhouettes and abstract images of Mickey Mouse cleverly hidden by Disney Imagineers across the 40-square-mile Vacation Kingdom.

Hidden Mickeys began as an inside joke among Walt Disney Imagineers, the artists and engineers who design Disney parks and attractions. As word spread of these subtle tributes to Walt’s famous mouse, guests sought to find them all.

That search continues today.

Like Easter eggs, Hidden Mickeys have been placed secretly (and not so secretly) by Imagineers at locations across Walt Disney World Resort. Imagineers include Hidden Mickeys when designing, building or putting the finishing touches on a new attraction or hotel, hiding silhouettes, profiles and other images of Mickey Mouse in murals, queue areas and even golf course sand traps.

"The popularity of Hidden Mickeys has just snowballed with guests," says Dave Smith, founder and main archivist for Walt Disney Archives, and author of Disney: A to Z. "Many will almost use a magnifying glass through the parks to find as many as they can."

No one knows how many Hidden Mickeys exist throughout Walt Disney World Resort, since Imagineers have never kept an official roster documenting their existence.

In fact, no one knows when the first Hidden Mickey even appeared. And, since attractions are renovated and updated periodically, many have appeared and disappeared through the years.

Where the next Hidden Mickey will appear is anyone’s guess.

Here are some hints to start your quest for Hidden Mickeys at Walt Disney World Resort:

Magic Kingdom

While the Haunted Mansion boasts "999 Happy Haunts," it also has one "mouse" — a Hidden Mickey formed by an arrangement of dishes on the table in the attraction’s banquet scene.

A Hidden Mickey enjoys a lazy day on the river in the final scene in Frontierland’s Splash Mountain. A pink cloud floating high above the Zip-A-Dee Lady paddlewheeler bears a striking resemblance to a profile of Mickey lying on his back.

Epcot

Mickey goes around the world in Norway, Gateway to Scandinavia. A burly Viking sports a pair of Mickey Mouse ears on the mural above the queue line for Maelstrom, the pavilion’s boatride attraction.

Mickey Mouse has always been the brightest of stars. And at Spaceship Earth in Epcot Future World, Mickey is actually hidden in his own constellation just beyond the attraction’s loading area.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A subtle Hidden Mickey can be found in the supernatural realm of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. The young child actress who vanishes from the Hollywood Tower Hotel one stormy night is clutching a Mickey Mouse doll in the attraction’s pre-show.

Mickey rocks his way into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. Two Hidden Mickeys were placed in the tile floor in the attraction’s rotunda area.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Mickey can be "spotted" in the Pizzafari restaurant in the park’s Discovery Island. His silhouette can be found on a wall mural, cleverly hidden among leopard spots.

Mickey really digs The Boneyard in DinoLand U.S.A. In the woolly mammoth dig site, Mickey has been formed with a fan and two hard hats.

There are more than 25 Hidden Mickeys at Rafiki’s Planet Watch, with Mickey found hidden in murals, tree trunks and paintings of animals.

Resorts

Mickey is remembered by golfers around the world for his contribution to the sixth hole of Disney’s Magnolia golf course. A Hidden Mickey forms a giant sand trap that looms ominously next to the green. (Many golfers have not been too happy to find this Hidden Mickey, however, especially when they discover their golf ball has found it, as well.)

Golfers at Disney’s Osprey Ridge golf course may hone their skills on another giant Hidden Mickey. Mickey’s head is used as a putting green at the course’s clubhouse area.

Mickey always knows the right direction at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, where a Hidden Mickey is found on the weather vane atop the convention center.

At Downtown Disney Marketplace, a Hidden Mickey provides its share of splash-tastic fun. Interactive fountains at the entrance of the shopping, dining and entertainment district form Mickey’s familiar silhouette — providing a waterful time for children (and a surprising number of adults) who frolic in the leaping waters.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Whispering winds sweep across the balmy, Africa-like plain, a peaceful sanctuary at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. From balconies overlooking the savannas, hotel guests marvel as creatures large and small roam the grasses, forage for food and play in harmony.

But now Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge guests can actually enter this serene animal reserve for an up-close personal encounter – thanks to the Wanyama Safari experience.

Just before sunset, adventurers gather outside the lodge with a guide who readies the group for a traditional game-viewing safari. Up to 12 persons can board a specially designed vehicle for a bird’s-eye view of a typical North African safari.

Safari-goers are absorbed in careful observation as the vehicle moves along the picturesque savannas that horseshoe the majestic lodge. A pair of female reticulated giraffes from Northern Kenya pause from browsing and gracefully move within feet of the vehicle. Guests’ cameras and videos are poised to capture an unforgettable encounter with the tallest of the land mammals.

Greg Peccie, the resort’s animal curator, says the safari strives to recreate the essence of an African experience with free-roaming wildlife in an authentic environment.

“We wanted to give our guests a close look at our animals, understand how we manage the animals and offer a glimpse into the training of the animals,” said Peccie.

The hotel’s savannas are home to approximately 200 mammals and exotic birds representing a cross-section of the African palette – bongo, greater kudu, zebra, wildebeest, impala, African spoonbills and Eastern white pelicans, to name a few. Even the once-endangered national bird of South Africa, the blue crane, has found a home at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

“One of the real challenges was introducing animals and choosing the right ones to live in harmony in this environment,” said Peccie.

The second part of the journey leads to the resort’s signature restaurant, Jiko-The Cooking Place, where a savory South African feast awaits safari-goers. Flavors of Africa fill the air in a memorable meal blending regional spices and grains.

The experience begins with traditional African dips, breads and appetizers. Entrees such as oak-roasted filet of beef and chermoula-basted and roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, olives and roasted garlic are served family-style. Popular South African wines are paired with each course, which includes a sweet display of desserts.

The Wanyama Safari is offered to guests (age 8 and up) staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas, seven days a week at 4 p.m. For reservations, guests can call 407/938-4755, or visit the concierge desk at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge upon check-in.
