Walt Disney World Parade Celebrates Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Magic Kingdom Philharmonic Band came marching down Main Street, U.S.A., Monday behind New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. He was riding in a pewter convertible with Mickey Mouse, waving to cheering fans. He’d earned the ride – and the adulation – Sunday night by marching the Saints to a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida.

Celebrating Super Bowl heroes in “I’m Going to Disney…” commercials and rides down Main Street, U.S.A., at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort has been a grand tradition since 1987 and Super Bowl XXI. But this one was unique, involving a team and a city overcoming so much adversity that its fan base goes by the nickname “Who Dat Nation.”

As confetti cannons sprinkled Drew Brees with multi-colored paper Monday, it symbolically showered away 42 seasons of “wait till next year.” The waiting had ended at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, thanks in a big way to a torrent of pinpoint passes by Brees, who earned the Super Bowl MVP honor with a 32-completion, 288-yard, two-touchdown, no-interception performance.

Joining Brees for his celebratory ride at Walt Disney World Resort, along with Mickey Mouse in his football outfit, were Minnie Mouse (decked out as a cheerleader), Chip ‘n’ Dale in referee garb, and “football Goofy” plus players from a central Florida NFL Youth Football team.

Brees’ celebratory visit happened mere hours after he was featured in the 42nd “I’m Going To Disney…” commercial, a series that has featured a lineup of people from sports and beyond who have exclaimed the almost iconic line following milestone accomplishments.

Saints’ Drew Brees ‘Going to Disney World’ To Celebrate Victory, MVP Performance in Super Bowl XLIV

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – So how is New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees celebrating his heroic play in Super Bowl XLIV? In the frenzied moments just after his team claimed the National Football League championship Sunday night in South Florida, he stood in front of a TV camera and shouted five words that have become an almost iconic reaction to milestone achievements: “I’m going to Disney World!”

Brees’s pronouncement, part of the production for one of TV’s most enduring and celebrated commercials, was captured after the Saints’ 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts – a game during which he earned the MVP honor, completing a Super Bowl record-tying 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He was 16-for-17 in the second half, twice leading the Saints from behind. It added up to be a catalyst for the Saints’ first Super Bowl celebration in team history

On Monday (Feb. 8), Brees was to go to the place where millions of vacationers celebrate their personal milestone moments – Walt Disney World Resort. He was to be joined in the Magic Kingdom by NFL Youth Football players, who will participate with the Saints star in a Super Bowl celebration parade down Main Street, U.S.A.

This latest commercial is the 42nd of a series that began in 1987 following Super Bowl XXI. The first “I’m going to Disney World” commercial, featuring New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, was regarded as a groundbreaking concept – a produced national commercial involving a current event, airing on major networks within hours of its conclusion. Brees joins a lineup of people from sports and beyond who have celebrated milestone accomplishments in “I’m going to Disney World” commercials.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Two exciting additions are coming to Epcot World Showcase, with culinary expansions under way at the Italy pavilion and Mexico pavilion.

In Italy, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria is under construction with opening planned for fall 2010 in time for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Operated by Patina Restaurant Group, the same restaurateurs who run the pavilion’s Tutto Italia Ristorante, the 300-seat pizzeria is inspired by Naples 45, another Patina Restaurant Group pizzeria on East 45th Street in New York City.

The casual pizzeria will feature wood-burning ovens – and will import water from a source that most resembles the water in Naples, Italy, home of some of the world’s best pizza dough. The menu also will feature pastas, salads, sandwiches and Italian wines.

The 14,000-square-foot space will include indoor and outdoor dining.

At Mexico, the popular Cantina de San Angel restaurant is expanding, and will feature 400 seats with al fresco seating for lunch and a perfect place for viewing “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” the nightly Epcot fireworks spectacular.

The restaurant will feature south-of-the border creations from the culinary team at San Angel Inn LLC, who have run both the outside eatery and the pavilion’s San Angel Inn for more than 25 years. Opening also is set for fall 2010.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2010) – Four Major League Soccer clubs, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, will compete in the inaugural Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic Feb. 25 and 27, 2010.

The Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic kicks off the re-launch of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and is part of the 2010 ESPN The Weekend presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods.

On Thursday, Feb. 25 the Houston Dynamo face the New York Red Bulls at 6 p.m. followed by FC Dallas versus Toronto FC at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, the two losing teams will kick off at 6 p.m. with the two winners playing in the championship game at 8:30 p.m.

FC Dallas finished the 2009 season as one of the league's hottest teams, narrowly missing the post-season under the direction of Coach Schellas Hyndman. The FC Dallas squad was anchored by the MLS leading goal scorer, Jeff Cunningham, who notched 17 goals in his second season with the team. With key players from last season returning for the 2010 season including David Ferreira, Heath Pearce and Dax McCarty, FC Dallas are ready to start the MLS campaign and their quest for a playoff berth.

In their first two seasons, the Houston Dynamo won back-to-back MLS Cup championships in 2006-07. Led by head coach Dominic Kinnear, the Dynamo have also finished first (2008) and tied for first (2009) in the Western Conference in the last two seasons and represented the United States consistently in international competition.

The New York Red Bulls look to get off to a flying start in 2010, opening their brand new stadium, Red Bull Arena, in Harrison, N.J. this March. On the field, the Red Bulls are led by 2007 MLS Most Valuable Player finalist, Juan Pablo Angel, as well as new Coach Hans Backe. The Red Bulls look to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs and advance to the MLS Cup Final as they did in 2008.

Toronto FC begins their fourth season in MLS with hopes of reaching the post-season for the first time. Playing in the Eastern Conference, the League’s lone Canadian club finished with 39 points in 2009 and 10 wins, their best showing since their inception. With their new Coach, Preki, a strong nucleus of players led by two-time MLS Cup MVP Dwayne De Rosario, and a new grass pitch at their home BMO Field, Toronto FC is hoping for big things in 2010.

“Bringing four Major League Soccer teams to Central Florida to play in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic is very exciting and a big win for all of our local soccer players, fans, parents and spectators,” said Disney Sports Area Manager Patrick Dicks. “ESPN The Weekend is serving as a major platform for these teams to prepare for the upcoming season and we are proud to have them be a part of this re-branding weekend.”

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i conveys the connection of the new resort to the islands

KO OLINA, Hawai‘i (Jan. 19, 2010) – The highly anticipated Disney destination resort currently under construction on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu now has an official name and a dynamic new Web site offering an inside look at the project. The resort’s name – Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i – reflects the company’s deep commitment to celebrating the islands’ rich history and traditions. Plans call for the first phase of the resort to open in fall 2011.

“We want this resort destination to reflect the vibrant culture that surrounds it. The name ‘Aulani’ expresses a connection to tradition and deep story-telling – and its roots are here in this land,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president, Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering. “We’re so grateful to the local Hawaiians who led us to the discovery of this name, and our goal is to live up to its meaning.”

Rohde noted that Aulani translated from the Hawaiian language to English means “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages.”

The Resort

Nearby to historical sites on the western side of O‘ahu, Aulani will be located on 21 acres of oceanfront property in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development. The resort is planned to have 360 hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas.

Design plans call for amenities to engage every member of the family, a hallmark of a Disney vacation. Among the recreational highlights planned for the resort are pools and sunset-facing hot tubs, a snorkeling lagoon, a variety of kids’ club and other play programs for children, and a river, suitable for tube floating, running through a specially created volcanic outcropping.

The resort will also include an 18,000-square-foot spa designed with families in mind. The resort, built adjacent to a crystal-blue lagoon and a white-sand beach, is planned to also have two restaurants, a 14,545-square-foot conference center and 48,685 square feet of outdoor venues. Located nearby are the existing Ko Olina Marina and a Ted Robinson-designed, 18-hole championship golf course.

The Web Site

Disney has launched a new preview Web site, www.DisneyAulani.com, to provide updates and background information on the resort now under construction. The site also details some of the adventures and amenities under development, and includes conceptual art, descriptions of resort highlights, regularly updated resort information and photos of Aulani as it nears completion.

“We are looking forward to welcoming guests to Aulani to share the fun, immersive family vacation experiences Disney is known for combined with the beauty and culture of Hawai‘i,” said Djuan Rivers, vice president, Disney Vacation Club and Resort, Hawai‘i. “We are turning to the Hawaiian culture for inspiration in everything we are doing at Aulani, and we hope our guests will not only enjoy the Disney experience, but will also embrace the unique culture of Hawai‘i and its diverse people.”

From a Splash of Floral Color to Splashing-Good Water Thrills, Summer 2010 Unwraps Vacation Fun at Walt Disney World Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Summer sun and summer fun. At Walt Disney World Resort, they go together like fairytales and fireworks, flying elephants and Fantasyland… Mickey and Minnie!

As Disney Parks continues “What Will You Celebrate?” the Florida Vacation Kingdom is alive with exciting events and magical attractions to make it a summer to remember for guests. It’s also the time for cooling fun at a water park.

Here’s a sampling of Disney fun for May-August, 2010 …

* * *

On the calendar, summer doesn’t arrive until June 21. On the thermometer, however, it’s already summer-like by May in central Florida with average daytime highs in the upper 80s. In June, July and August, average highs are in the low 90s.

So what’s a guest to do to make vacation a splash?

Walt Disney World Resort features more than 50 themed pools – and sometimes sandy beaches – at more than 20 resort hotels. The pools are a perfect place to make a splash mid-day, taking a break from the theme parks during the historically busiest time at the parks. (Resort reservations are available at 407/W-DISNEY, online at Disneyworld.com or through a travel agent.)

But all the fun isn’t IN the water; there’s also plenty of recreation ON the water of the 850 acres of lake surface at Walt Disney World Resort. Eleven marinas across the property rent a navy’s worth of watercraft – more than 500 Sea Raycers, canopy boats, float boats, jet boats, sailboats, rowing boats, pedal boats and canoes.

There’s also water skiing, bass fishing excursions and surf lessons.

Surf lessons in central Florida? Right! Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park is home to a two-and-one-half-acre wave-making lagoon with surfing-size waves. By advance reservation (407/WDW-PLAY), guests can participate in a 2½-hour learn-to-surf program that takes place prior to Typhoon Lagoon opening on designated mornings.

Summer wouldn’t be summer without the splashy fun of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon or Disney’s Blizzard Beach, two of the most popular water parks in the world. When the sun heats up, the fun begins at both water parks. From the speediest speed slide to the laziest stream perfect for inner-tubing, Disney’s water parks have it all.

Greeting guests this summer are new premium spaces aimed at letting guests luxuriate on their water parks day. Six “Polar Patios” at Blizzard Beach and six “Beachcomber Shacks” at Typhoon Lagoon can take relaxation to a new level.

Each space includes upgraded furniture, towels, waiter service, private locker, all-day drink mugs, a cooler with ice and bottled water. Pricing depends on date and time of visit. Callers to 407/WDW-PLAY can get pricing, reservations and more information.

* * *

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival (through May 16) – The curtain rose March 3, but there is still time to catch the final weeks of the 17th annual flower fest. Future World and World Showcase are floral fantasylands as guests roam amid 30 million blooms adorned in artful flower beds, lush rose gardens and floating islands of flowers plus expertly crafted bonsai trees and whimsical topiaries.

For gardening aficionados, there’s a supporting cast of celebrity guest speakers, hands-on seminars and innovative planting demonstrations and exhibits. Gardening tools and other products may be purchased to help guests grow and maintain the perfect garden.

And what better way to finish off the day than live music from bands from the 1960s and 1970s during the Flower Power Concert Series. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the festival, the “way-back” memories pour from America Gardens Theatre, adjacent to The American Adventure pavilion.

More information about the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is available by calling 407/W-DISNEY(934-7639) or by visiting www.disneyworld.com/flowerfestival.

Most festival activities, including gardening programs and exhibits, are included in regular Epcot admission.

* * *

Star Wars Weekends (each Friday-Sunday May 21-June 13, 2010) – “The Force” returns to Walt Disney World Resort as Disney’s Hollywood Studios becomes “Star Wars Central” for guests of all ages during the annual sci-fi fan-fest.

The power of the Force and magic of Disney combine as plenty of out-of-this-world characters – including Wookiees, droids, Ewoks, bounty hunters and Jedi – roam the streets of the theme park. Also featured in special meet-and-greet opportunities are characters from the animated film and TV series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

New Dining Room at Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – True Disney foodies know you haven’t arrived until you’ve dined at the crème de la crème of restaurants – Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. But now the top-rated dining room has a new “must do”: the gorgeous Queen Victoria’s Room.

Queen Victoria’s Room is behind closed doors just off the main dining room. With just four tables, restaurant manager Israel Perez promises attention to your every whim. They’ve brought back French gueridon service – a gueridon is a fancy rolling cart that goes from table to table for customized service and “wow” factor – a flourish of Himalayan sea salt atop your filet, a decadent wine sauce or a lavish display of cheese, for instance.

Anyone who’s tasted Chef Scott Hunnel’s exquisite creations knows this is a memorable affair. How often do you savor perfectly seared Kurobuta pork tenderloin and belly, or butter-poached lobster with bisque and lobster roe foam? And vegans and vegetarians are Hunnel’s favorite challenge. The sommelier happily will pair something delicious with each of the 10 courses. Yes, 10 courses, but they’re small. Still, plan on three to four hours of leisurely dining.

It’s worth the price of a baby-sitter – no kids under 10 are allowed in the dining room, so you’re guaranteed an evening of blissful quiet. Be advised, men must wear jackets (tie optional) for this formal affair.

You’ll float out the door with a long-stemmed rose for women and personalized menus for everyone to carry home. Cost for Queen Victoria’s Room is $200 per person, plus $95 for wine pairings. The restaurant has its own reservation line, 407/939-3862.

Reservations for Queen Victoria’s Room are being accepted now for this special dining experience starting Feb. 5, 2010. There is just one seating nightly.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – (Jan. 9, 2010) – Michigan runners Chad Johnson and Emily Mortensen weathered near freezing temperatures Saturday to take home the men’s and women’s Walt Disney World Half Marathon division titles.

Braving freezing rain and temperatures in the low-30s, Johnson won for the second time after streaking to the finish at the Walt Disney World Half Marathon presented by CIGNA in 2008. Johnson, 33, who trained for the Disney event by running at times in snowy conditions in Rochester Hills, Mich., battled fellow Hanson’s Brooks Distance Project Running Club member Sage Canaday for nearly 10 miles before pulling away and finishing at 1:07:02 - 18 seconds ahead of Canaday. Luis Rivera from Puerto Rico was third at 1:08:55.

After the race, Johnson said he and some of his Hanson’s Brooks running club teammates were going to celebrate by going to the Magic Kingdom.

Mortensen, 27, took the women’s title with a time of 1:20:58, finishing just ahead of Jen Blue (1:21:37) and Elizabeth Foster (1:21:52).

Jon Williams, 41, of Miami won the Masters division (ages 40 and up) with a time of 1:18:09. Ramilya Burangulov, 48, from Gainesville, Fla. ran away with the women’s Masters race with a time of 1:22:22.

Despite the unseasonably cold Florida weather, the field featured nearly 23,000 runners who covered the 13.1-mile course while being entertained with fireworks, music and appearances by several Disney characters.

Bastos Prevails in Dramatic Walt Disney World Marathon

Brazilian overcomes chilly weather and strong competition to claim sixth straight Disney victory and seventh overall; Mizutani claims back-to-back women’s titles; field of nearly 24,000 runners pushes record marathon weekend total to more than 55,500

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – (Jan. 10, 2010) – Adriano Bastos weathered the elements and a late-race challenge Sunday to snag his sixth consecutive Walt Disney World Marathon present by CIGNA and seventh overall. Likewise, Lisa Mizutani won the women’s title for the second straight year.

Unlike last year when Bastos, 31, led the 26.2 mile race virtually from start to finish, the colorful Brazilian battled temperatures in the low-30s and was pushed much of the race by several competitors, creating the tightest finish among Bastos’ seven victories at Disney. With about three miles to go, Bastos opened a small lead and crossed the finish line at 2:22:08 – 33 seconds ahead of fellow Brazlian Fredison Costa (2:22:41). Jay Lumpkins of Ocoee, Fla., was third (2:24:24).

“The real challenge wasn’t the cold weather, but it was the fact that I had someone challenging me for first place,’’ said Bastos, whose goal is to win 10 straight Disney Marathons. “This is the first time that I felt that I had runners at the same level with me. I was scared. I thought my streak might be broken.’’

Mizutani, 24, of Japan won just as easily as she did a year ago, this time crossing the finish line in 2:51:20 - more than five minutes ahead of Christa Benton of St. Petersburg, Fla (2:56:43).

Matthew Dobson of Jay, Fla., was the top men’s Masters Division finisher (runners age 40 and over) with a time of 2:38:15 and Terri Rejimbal won the women’s Masters Division with 3:14:26. In the wheelchair division, Krige Schabort of Cedartown, Ga. (1:42:35) and Shirley Reilly of Tucson, Ariz. (2:22:30), both won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, for the second straight year.

The Disney Marathon capped a weekend of endurance events at Disney, including the Disney Half Marathon, the Disney-Pixar Up and Away Family Fun Run 5K, Disney’s Kids Races and a Health & Fitness Expo. In all, more than 55,000 runners registered for events throughout the weekend, making this the largest Disney Marathon Weekend since the event’s debut in 1994.

Package: Run For Avery / Mark Fitzgerald Story

Mark Fitzgerald ran the 2010 Walt Disney Marathon to celebrate the life of his youngest daughter and the technology used to save her life. Avery Fitzgerald, now one year old, was born with her umbilical cord wrapped and knotted around her neck. Doctors in Denver used new technology, a hypothermic cooling blanket developed by Cincinnati Sub-Zero to assist her recovery and save her life. To honor his daughter and raise awareness for cooling blanket technology, Fitzgerald pledged to run three marathons, 78 miles, which represent the 78 hours his daughter was treated in a cooling blanket. He completed marathons in his hometown of Philadelphia and his current community of Denver. Fitzgerald’s dream came true on Sunday when he celebrated with little Avery and the entire family after completing this year’s Walt Disney World Marathon.

Package: Run For the Fallen / Malcolm Strong Story

Air Force Cadet Third Class Malcolm Strong ran the Walt Disney Marathon for more than just himself, it was a “Run for the Fallen.” The Central Florida native wants to raise awareness for all the men and women killed in the United States global war on terrorism. Strong ran the 26.2 miles in full military fatigues, carried a 30 pound backpack, and handed out American flags along the route. More importantly to the Air Force Cadet, he carried letters from family members whose loved ones were killed in the service of our country. Carrying a large American flag the exhausted Strong crossed the finish line to the cheers of thousands of spectators. With tears streaming from his eyes he was greeted by his family. He will wear the 2010 Disney World Marathon medal he earned with pride.
